By Miss Murray | Monday 22nd Sep 2003 12:00

What is it?

Topshelf Bookclub is a Club just for S1 which meets once a week in the Library. Every week you will find lots of different activities all connected in some way with books and reading, but the main idea is that it should be fun. These are some of things you will be able to do:

?Quizzes and competitions
?Games and other fun activities
?Talk about books and reading
?Read and perform poetry and plays
?Help choose books for the Club Library
?Listen to stories

When is it?

Topshelf meets every Thursday lunchtime from 1.10 to the end of lunch. The Library will only be open for the Bookclub at these times. Please be prompt as latecomers will not be admitted.

Who can join?

Topshelf is open to any one in S1 but spaces will be limited, so see the Library staff to sign up. Anyone can come to one meeting (subject to numbers) to see if they like it. After that you can sign up for a membership card. You will be asked to supply a passport-sized photograph to put on your membership card.

Who else is involved?

Miss MacLean and Miss Murray will be there every week, and other members of staff and seniors will come at different times, to help out.

Club events over the past year have included:

?Shipwrecked! Club members chose their favourite literary character (these included Harry Potter, Gollum and Winnie-the-Pooh) and decided which of them should be thrown off a sinking ship and which saved.

?The Story Game: making up an ?Instant story? using some random words pulled out of a hat. The stories pass round so you are adding to someone else?s story.

?Book Bingo! Prizes!

?Waterstones visit ? to choose books for the Club Library

?Win, Lose or Draw ? One person draws their idea of a book title, and the rest guess what it is.

?The L-Files ? a magazine of book reviews, cartoons, jokes etc. produced on the school Intranet by Club members.

But we need your ideas and suggestions for other things you would like to do - so come along and give it a try!
