Stanley Mills Trip
The History Department visited Stanley Mill with a group of 30 S2 pupils.
On arrival the group were met by the Mill Bell ringing signaling the beginning of the working day at 5.45am!They were met at the gate house by ‘Annie’ a 19th century mill worker who was shocked to see some of the boys hairstyles and girls who actually wore trousers!
Annie took the pupils on a tour of the mill and gave them some idea of how hard a working day would be when they role played cleaning the large weaving machines, winding the bobbins and making sure they stayed uninjured in the process.
Everyone then had the opportunity to see how the mill operated using the energy of the water of the River Tay, which turned the huge wheels which then powered the weaving and spinning machines.
Visiting Stanley gave everyone a chance to go back in time to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.
