Eco Schools NewsletterBy Fiona | Thursday 2nd Dec 2004 12:00 After a very successful 2003-4 session, we thought it was time to recap and also to plan the way ahead for 2004-5 when we will be applying for our second green flag in the summer.
Throughout the year various projects were completed, added to or begun with a view to carrying on this year. We planted a fruit orchard on the front triangle of grass. Twenty one fruit trees, a mixture of apple, pear and cherry were planted by Mrs Dinning and her life skills class. The trees have all blossomed and some even produced some fruit in the Autumn. We also planted some more daffodils in that area to add to the thousands around the school ground. In the springtime various pupils and Mrs Deas from the Learning Support Base were very busy in the greenhouse garden planting summer bedding and vegetable plants. We produced excellent tomatoes, strawberries, cabbage, lettuce and beetroot.
The pupils enjoyed watching the development of tiny plants and seeds and tested the fruits of their labour. Throughout the year Mrs K Stevenson and her lunchtime Art Club have been very busy producing huge fruit and vegetables and also fruit mobiles to decorate the Junior Dining Hall and front entrance. With the help of Mr McAninch, these spectacular pieces were in place at the start of term, promoting our healthy eating theme. Mrs Stevenson and a first year class designed and painted the mural beside the greenhouse garden. This will be completed this year with a different class. We entered a number of competitions throughout the year and are pleased to report successes in all three! In May we won ?250 and 1st prize in the Take a Pride in Your School Competition. In the ?Harris Moore? competition we were highly commended and won ?50 and in September we retained the Perth in Bloom Trophy. Moving on to 2004-5, we had a very successful bulb fundraising with the Bulb man raising ?730 fro school funds and one of our pupils was the second top salesman in the UK winning ?100 for himself. We also won ?50 of bulbs. These are going to be planted out by the XL Group. The Make a Difference Group led by Mrs Simpson and Mrs Stevenson have transformed the boys and girls toilets in the concourse and also spent some time planting our bulbs and pots of winter flowering plants. Mrs L Millar and Mr R Hands have designed a little garden which will transform the glassed-in area along the Geography corridor. Hopefully this will go ahead in May. Mr M Reid who is involved with the greenhouse garden is at present working with a group of S6 pupils designing and building bat and bird boxes. As well as paper and can recycling we are about to introduce cardboard recycling, which should make a considerable difference to the amount of waste we produce each week. The prefects are now up and running with the paper recycling and we shall call on Kate Barlow?s services to help with the litter campaign in the Spring. Eco schools is going from strength to strength with lots of pupils and staff involvement. Any comments, help and ideas will be gratefully received! Official Eco Schools Website Eco PhotoGallery |
