Attendance & Punctuality

By JR on 27/6/2003

Regular, punctual attendance at school is essential if satisfactory education is to take place.

A regular, period-by-period absence check is taken throughout the day.

All pupils returning from absence must bring a note of explanation indicating the period of absence and signed by the parent. This must be given to the appropriate Form Teacher on the morning the pupil returns to school. Notes requesting excused attendance should be given to the appropriate Year Head. Normally, pupils will be released in good time for attendance at dentist/doctor/optician but not necessarily for other reasons. The safety of pupils is the responsibility of their parents if a request has been made for permission to leave school.

Normally, parents are encouraged to telephone the school if a period of absence is expected to extend beyond three days. If no contact is received, the school will issue an absence enquiry after three days. However, if pupils have been previously caught playing truant then parents will be asked to contact the school at once to warn of any justifiable absence. In these cases, if no parental contact is made, the Guidance Teacher will be asked to communicate with parents on the first day of absence.

If unsatisfactory attendance persists then the pupil may be placed on a Truants' Register and their case may then be referred to the Attendance Committee of Perth and Kinross Council. In extreme cases, parents have been prosecuted for failure to ensure their child's attendance at school.

Our expectation is that, barring illness, pupils will attend 100% of all classes.

LATECOMING

All pupils are expected to attend school punctually each day. The names of pupils who arrive late are recorded in the daily attendance record. Pupils who arrive in school after 9.05 a.m. report to the School Office where a lateness slip is issued. Persistent latecoming is investigated by Guidance staff and appropriate action taken.
