PHS Toilets Loos Old Image

By McPhail on 17/11/2004

1st Year pupils have been involved in Make a Difference Day this year at school by doing paintings in each of the toilets for junior pupils. This day is for volunteering across Britain and it was the first time PHS have taken part. The event was a big success and will be repeated next year on a much bigger scale.

A handful of first year pupils have been taking part in the Active Citizenship Programme that has been running since the start of the year and was organised by Principal Teacher of Guidance for Pitheavlis Mrs Simpson. Mrs Simpson was also helped by Art & Design teacher Mrs Stevenson who was putting her creative thoughts to the paintings and another Guidance Teacher Mrs McCallum who is also a health expert. Mrs Simpson is also a Social Education teacher and this is how the pupils started to learn about the Active Citizenship Programme in class.

The pupils did the paintings for Make a Difference Day to improve the school’s toilets. The idea to paint the toilets came from the pupil council which has a pupil from every year and every house. The pupils painted the toilets on the 5th November. The boys and girls toilets were done by pupils and also with the help of Art & Design teacher Mrs Stevenson. Each toilet was painted by 10 pupils with the girls doing their toilet and the boys painted their own toilet.

The theme in the girls was about being an active and healthy education person so the paintings were about being in the fresh air cycling with healthy messages. As usual the girl’s main colour was the most popular colour with girls: pink. One 1st year girl said that “this was a great day which was a nice and messy way to help the school”. Also senior pupil Sara Fox explained the day, “it was a bit smelly, but it’s now nice, bright and colourful to create a lively atmosphere”. The paintings were a good idea to help the school improve the image of creating a nice atmosphere in the toilets.

The boy’s toilets theme was about fishes playing football and it was all done by the 1st year boy’s who were selected. The boy’s toilets were in the supposedly favourite colours: blue. The young 1st year boy I spoke to said how good it was, “it’s been time well spent on improving our school”. Sixth year pupil Adam Baird hit the nail on the head with his comment on the toilets, “it’s bringing younger pupils together with them working with senior pupils to the benefit of the school”. The 1st year pupils were helped by senior pupils. The senior pupils who also helped out with the paintings were from the Pitheavlis house.

The Active Citizenship Programme is likely to continue for a long time at the school. Next year the Programme is likely to be expanded to more kids next year as they had so many replies to the first Active Citizenship Programme.
