Minutes of Meeting 19/11/02

Present: Mrs M Tattersfield, Mrs J Pedgrift, Jennifer Loudon, Sarah Connolly, Craig Martin, Bruce Fletcher.
Apologies: Jamie Rae, Mari Higginbotham (Wind Band)

Mrs J Pedgrift welcomed the committee and explained the ‘Eco-School’ targets and areas that we are concentrating on this year. The committee is splitting into small task groups and particular areas of interest as follows:

Litter
Sarah and Mrs Pedgrift are concentrating on litter. All committee members are looking for problem areas within the school. Already identified are the concourse, the end stairwell and the ice-cream vans at lunchtime. Photos are going to be taken and evidence shown to pupils. The litter program will be set up next week with all first and second year classes timetabled to be shown a litter video and to do a litter clean-up.

Recycling
Jennifer is organising the recycling. This is now well established, with paper recycling bins throughout the school being emptied regularly by prefects.

Energy Saving
Bruce, Craig and Mrs Tattersfield are going to take charge of saving energy. We are going to telephone Perth & Kinross Council’s Environmental Services department to ask for posters to display around the school. The man in charge of energy in schools, Mr Gordon Dick, will be invited to come into school. Pupils will also identify problem classrooms.

School Environment
During the discussion at the meeting several ideas were mentioned. These included a mural on the wall, a mosaic of tiles, benches, picnic benches, bird tables, trees and a pond. Sarah is going to speak to Mrs Donald, Mr Loptson and Mrs Barn in the Learning/Behavioural Support department to get their ideas for our new garden outside their department. Craig and Bruce will go round all first year register classes next week to explain the Eco-Schools Mural competition. The mural will be along the wall going down to the Junior Dining Hall.

Healthy Eating
Mrs Tattersfield will see Mrs Hood, the senior Dining Lady, and Bruce and Craig will also help out in this area. The committee were of the opinion that larger posters were required and that healthy snacks should be provided in the vending machines. The points system already in place in the Junior Dining Hall will be extended to the Senior Dining Hall. A Taste of Something Healthy is to be introduced, with the Rector being contacted regarding finances for this.

Meeting concluded at 1:40pm, with lots of feedback for the next meeting one month from now.
