1st years contribute to Eco SchoolsBy Nicola Glenday | Wednesday 31st Mar 2004 12:00All of the 1st years, over the past 5 weeks, have been given the chance to do their bit for their environment in Perth High!
This involved them going round the school grounds and the Oakbank area, picking up litter to be recycled later on. These days were taken part every friday, last 3 periods of the day.
To start off, the Balmanno classes (1B1 and 1B2) went first, secondly Elcho classes (1E3 and 1E4) came second. The third house to take part was Huntingtower (1H5 and 1H6), fourth was Kinfauns (1K7 and 1K8) and finally Pithevalis classes (1P9 and 1P10). All houses participated very well, and did a brilliant job. The two important people who gave the 1st years a chance to have this event every friday, were Kate Barlow and Miss Pedigrift. They organised the whole 5weeks themselves to make all 1st years understand how important it is to not drop litter. Kate Barlow has been round to many other Primary Schools and Secondary Schools to speak about recycling, aswell as us. Before the 1st years got to work, they had to watch a video, to understand why they were doing the task they were doing for the afternoon. The video contained how the litter was recycled, and what would happen to you if you got caught dropping litter anywhere in the streets. If you did get caught, you could get a fine from ?25 up to thousands of pounds. All the 1st years got to work, with prefects looking after them in groups. The prefects would take them around the school grounds or Oakbank. Some pupils got to pick up litter on the stairwell and in the concourse. Each 1st year pupil got given a litter picker and bags, and had to fill as any as they could. They all had round about an hour to do their task and would meet back at the Junior Dining Hall. It got to the end of the day, and Miss Pedigrift, Kate Barlow, prefects and 1st year pupils would meet back up together. People won prizes for answering questions, and a prefect would pick a pupil for working the hardest in their group. The best pupil won a prize as well. This has been a great 5 weeks. The majority of pupils worked hard, learnt a lot, and enjoyed themselves. It has made some 1st years think about dropping litter in the school grounds, and out of them. There are plenty of bins in the school grounds, so why not use them? Just think the next time you go to drop litter... use the bin instead. |
