Cumbrae 2010

It's time again for our annual sailing/windsurfing trip.

Sunday:

Just a quick message tonight to say we have arrived safely. The newly refurbished chalets have bedrooms that are all ensuite - the boys managed to bag the best one - not quite sure how that happened! But there's no living room in the chalet now. Weather when we got here was absolutely beautiful, after the horrible rain of this morning. Bad news is...there's really not much wind so far. I'll keep you posted!

Monday:

Oh no! A terrible thing just happened! Catriona just spent half an hour writing a really detailed blog, and the website timed out so it's all lost, and I'm going to have to try to recreate it!!!

So this morning the girls were rudely awaked by Liam's early morning alarm call (he jumping on their heads!!!). Connor and Eilidh started the day well before the rest of us with a half hour run, but when we all got up the sun was shining, some wind was blowing and we were set for the day!

After a filling breakfast we sat outside in the sun and waited for our instructors. We were divided into two groups - the absolute beginners and the intermediate group who had already got their level two certificates. The intermediates had BB for their instructor and were quickly sailing around by themselves in Picos and the beginners were in Stratos with their instructors Emma and Steven. The beginners had a go at steering, and the intermediates capsized (they SAID it was deliberate..)

The morning passed really quickly, and lunchtime was spent sunbathing and listening to music. Some of us (ahem Liam) caught more of the sun than others. As the wind had really dropped, the Intermediate group started the afternoon with some on land theory, while the beginners learned how to tack and set off on to the water to practise.

Luckily the wind got up and soon we were speeding along, quickly enough that Natasha, Rachael and Alice could no longer carry on jellyfish spotting. Catriona worked on her abs with her feet in the footstraps leaning out over the side doing sit ups (also helping us not to capsize...) and before we knew it the afternoon was over.

This evening we've been in Millport - most of us walked but some people hitched a lift with me in the minibus. Connor has been well and truly made over: bronzer and ponytails is the look for summer 2010. Watch out for the photographic evidence coming to a plasma screen near you... We've been working off the deep fried Mars bar at the gym.

Looking forward to tomorrow...apart from the rain that's forecast that is!!!

Tuesday
Catriona
Miss Sorbie woke us up at twenty five past eight when she realised she couldn't actually hear us for once. We had a mad five minute dash to get ready for breakfast.
The day was drizzly and grey, no one really wanted to go out on the water. We were all half dead as we never had hardly any sleep. Our eyes drooped and instead of talking we groaned or mumbled.
As the day was horrible it was pretty windy, the group were told it would be a perfect day to windsurf and were given the option of that instead of sailing. The three intermediate sailors (Eilidh, Connor and Liam) decided to stick to sailing and achive their stage 3 level where as the beginner sailors opted for windsurfing.
Our wetsuits were only a bit damp from the previous day so they weren't that unpleasant to put on. Wrapped up warm and ready for a day of getting soaked we headed for the sheds.
The windsurfers were given a quick theory, given their equipment and headed for the beach. The sailors were on the picos speeding away before we knew it. Only one capsiser though (cough, Liam, cough), pity.
Lunch was spent inside today much to our disappointment that we couldnt sun bathe. We heated up with pasta and baked potatoes.
Putting on our soaking wetsuits was horrible: luckily we were back in the water quickly. The windsurfers learned how to turn and zig zag. I am told the sailors went looking for a dolphin that swims around here but sadly never saw him/her.
The whole group were desperate for showers and rushed to their chalets to be first. It was just Connor's luck that the hot water ran out AGAIN! He hasn't managed to have a shower yet where the water hasn't run out, poor him :L.
Anyways after tea we mucked about on the beach and got some pretty nice photos. We are in the lounge now just chilling on Connor and Liam's laptops.
I'm off for now bye x

Thursday:

Sorry no blog yesterday - the network was down, but here's some photos of the fun we've been having today!!!

Yesterday we had some nice wind and sunshine, so the windsurfing group learned to run and gybe, and the sailing group took out some darts and learned to use the trapeze. Above you can see the photos of the windsurfing group getting their certificates for passing their start windsurfing course. Well done everyone!!!

The winds were so light today though they had to abandon windsurfing and instead the sailing group took us out to demonstrate their skills in the darts - each of them had us as crew and we set off for Largs for the annual ice cream trip! Thanks to Connor's expert captaincy, our group got there first, and we found a mooring and waited for the others. After a nice ice cream from Nardinis - yum!!!- we had a walk along the front and got the rib back to the centre - the plan was to go back after lunch and sail back.

Lunch we spent sunbathing - sorry parents - they are all a little pink! Then we set off back to get the darts. The small flaw in this plan was that by the time we got back the wind had totally died. We tried really hard to make our way back - the thought of swimming in a jellyfish free zone egging us on. Rachael, Natasha and Eilidh were the paddle power champions, although I'm not sure playing chicken with the ferry was the best idea! Eventually though we had to give up, and got a tow back to the centre.

Then came the bit that Rachael and Natasha had been waiting for - jumping in off the pontoon. I felt I had to join them, but Catriona decided to sunbathe, until Connor sneaked up behind her as she lay sunbathing, and he and Joan helped her in to get wet. Connor soon followed :) How we laughed! Not so funny was the swimming with jellyfish when I tried to make it to the steps (it was scary! HELP!!!)

Tonight we have had a lovely barbecue for tea (amazing chicken) and went to Millport after for some last minute sweeties. Rachael and Tash tried to walk there to make up for not walking the last time, but they didn't quite make it.

Alice, Rachael and I have just watched a lovely sunset, while Natasha tried to improve international relations with the German sailors who have just arrived, and the others watched a film.

So sad tonight is our last night. Am off to stow away somewhere...night!
