Internet Safety

Are you worried about your children when they are surfing the Internet?

Do you know what sites they visit on the Net?

Is the computer situated in their room or in a communal area?

It can be a worrying time to be a parent as your children become more proficient at using the Internet while going through the phase where they are less communicative with you ! It is also difficult to give advice as websites are constantly changing.

However, there are a number of good sites which can offer advice to parents ( and young adults) about the type of sites which are, or are not, suitable. Some of these are listed below.

Get Safe Online - advice for all

Be Safe Online - advice for parents and teachers

ThinkUKnow - advice for young people

ChatDanger - advice for all

KidSmart - advice for young people, parents and schools

Stop Text Bully
- advice for all regarding a growing problem and includes a resource pack for teachers

Advice from Orange - relating to mobile phones

Be aware of the following sites which have caused trouble both within and outwith the school because of the casual way information is shared by young people. This does not mean that these sites are in themselves dangerous, just that they are inappropriate for young children and even older teenagers and parents should be aware of the risks and inappropriate nature of some of the material.

MySpace
Bebo- although Bebo has a Safe Usage section (click the Safety tab on the page) which is useful
Face Party - possibly the most inappropriate site
